Right now in Status there is no concept of “online”, “offline”, or “away”. This has an interesting effect on the chat experience. It’s almost like you’re speaking into a void, which could have millions of people, or no one. It feels quite detached.
Not only that, but I feel like having a concept of presence in Status would aid in adoption because it becomes a place where you can hang out with people. It becomes a place.
From a technical standpoint, it seems like you can do a simple ping every n seconds on a whisper topic that you publish for your friends or chatroom participants to listen to. After some time with no check-in you’re considered idle or offline.
Plus, it would also be an interesting load test for whisper
